  • Apologized to CPs for the mistake in ELTC’s calling letter for the CPs to register at BTPN Sabah on Saturday instead of Sunday. It was dealt with by Pn. Wanda from JPN Sabah on thrusday -she had to call up each CP and make changes to flight bookings etc.
  • Briefing about CPELT using the PPT given by Pn. Azizah.

3. Bendahari : Pn. Ivy Lau 016 – 8175168
- The training sessions went on smoothly after the BTPN ICT technician adjusted the settings for the LCD & laptop screen resolution. It was not clear when the lecturers tried to project the slides before 8am. Lindsay covered Topic 1 (2 hours) & Topic 2 (Topic). Topic 3 was continued by me (Elaine) in session 3.
The materials and stationary brought are sufficient for the next 2 weeks. There are extra white A4 paper & poster sheets left behind from the Action Research course held last week at this venue.
- The only problem the trainers realised is that the calling letter for the course did not state for the teachers (CPs) to bring their textbooks and KSSR teachers guidebook. Only 1 teacher had a textbook today. The trainers have asked the teachers to get some text books, at least two books in each group ( 1 for lower primary – KSSR and the other for upper primary – KBSR) by next week. For this week, plan B would be for the trainer to photocopy 5 different units from a Year 1 textbook borrowed from one CP. One unit will be given to each group to refer to during sessions.

DAY
2
21 Feb 2012
- The number of CPs have remained at 21 as of today. Pn. Wanda from JPN Sabah sent a text message to enquire about those who have not turned up. The team leader replied her text message with the names of teachers on the name list who have not registered for the course.
- At 3.00pm, one of the teachers who have not registered, Liaw Seu Tee arrived. She said she received a call from her PPD officer to attend this course although she has not received a calling letter. After discussing a few things about the course with the team leader, she said she has to go back and talk to her headmistress about finding a replacement for her. She is currently a ‘Penolong Kanan Ko-Kurikulum’ (PK Ko-ko) and also teaching English to examination classes.
- Two teachers have applied for time off today :
1. Zailah bt Abdul Karim – 8.00am -12.30pm : To take her child to a clinic
2. Jasri bin Joe – 3.00pm -4.15pm : To repair the break lining of his car at the Perodua service centre in Donggongon
- One of the teachers, Nuseh Sindeh brought a letter from PPD Kota Belud which stated she has been appointed to be on duty as ‘Fisioterapi Pasukan MSSS Zon Selatan from 20-24 Feb 2012. She wanted permission to accompany her pupils for the sports event and be on duty. The team leader contacted Pn. Azizah to double check on the issue. Pn. Azizah replied to remind teachers that they are suppose to be here for the course and not doing school related duties as stated by Dr. Ranjit during his meeting with lecturers on 17 Feb 2012. The team leader has informed the CP.
- The caterer, En.Ahmad met the trainers during lunch break to check on the quality of food etc. The trainers informed him that everything is fine thus far.
The training room & facilities are good at BTPN Sabah. The training room is big enough for group work and the air condition is working well. There are 5 groups of 4-5 CPs per group. The speakers are very clear and the trainer had no difficulty in playing the video for Topic 4. The volume was loud and clear. There is a whiteboard, LCD and a huge screen. There are also tables and at the back of the training room to store course materials and boxes as well as seats for the trainers when they aren’t training.
- The training session went on well today and timing is on par as the training schedule for L&S (Week 1). Topics 1-3 have been completed. The remaining activities for Topic 3 was completed by 12.00pm by me (Elaine). Three hours of Topic 4 has been completed today and will be continued tomorrow by Lindsay. All the teachers (CPs) do not have the KSSR handbook with them. Only five of them are teaching Year 1 and have the KSSR syllabus. The trainers have decided to give the CPs the softcopy of the KSSR handbook and the KSSR syllabus.

DAY 3
22 Feb 2012
- There was full attendance today, 21 CPs.
- A CP asked the team leader for a letter from ELTC stating that they are on ‘Cuti Belajar’. This is because she has been called back to school every morning at 7.20am before she comes for the CPELT course at 8am and she is expected to return to school on Friday afternoons. The team leader contacted Pn. Wanda to assist and explain to the headmasters and headmistresses. Pn.Wanda replied that her KPP (Ketua Penolong Pengarah) and herself would be coming to the course venue to explain a few things to the CPs.
- The training session continued with Topic 4 by Lindsay until 2.30pm. The trainer reviewed the listening framework in Activity 2 and this was followed by Activity 3 & Activity 4. Since the teachers did not bring their textbooks, the trainer made photocopies of 2 different units from a lower primary (Year 1) and an upper primary (Year 3 or Year 5) textbook and gave them to each group for reference while planning their activities.
At about 2.30pm, I (Elaine) started off with Topic 5 on Speaking Skills. We covered Activity 1 by looking at the KSSR syllabus and KBSR syllabus as well as the units from the textbooks to all groups. We had 5 groups in class. Each group was asked to look at 2 different levels such as the following :
Year 1 & Year 3
Year 1 & Year 5
The class ended at 4.15pm after the group presentations. CPs were reminded to obtain ring files and compile all their notes, handouts and readings.

DAY 4
23 Feb 2012
- There was full attendance today, 21 CPs.
- Topic 5 was continued today for a total of 6 hours and 45 minutes by me (Elaine). As predicted by the two trainers, we might have some extra time, thus we had prepared 5 complete sets of 44 phonemes cards yesterday. Lindsay suggested to teach the CPs to play the 'Fan-N-Pick' game using these phoneme cards. At the last half an hour of the day, I included this game and a worksheet entitled 'Join the dots' as a supplement to the other phonics activities. The worksheet was carried out as an individual task. The trainer had to make photocopies of these worksheets and units of the textbook outside the BTPN, nevertheless it proved to be useful as plan B because there were only 2 copies of textbook among all the teachers. CPs were also given a reading task for tonight, before starting Topic 6 tomorrow. They have to read the article labelled as Appendix 5.7.
- The team leader reminded CPs to submit a photocopy of their IC (Identification card) by tomorrow to the assistant monitor.
- There is no wifi connection to the training room (Bilik Mawar). Sometimes, it is possible to get connected to the internet access from the next room (Bilik Melur). The trainer has contacted the BTPN technician to assist us in getting proper internet connection before the ICT component. He agreed that they would extend the internet access from Bilik Melur to our current training room.

DAY 5
24 Feb 2012
- There was full attendance today, 21 CPs.
-The trainer (Elaine) started with Topic 6 and covered Activity 3 : 'What does a lesson involve?' first. The 'Exploring Metaphors' activity was carried out as the steps in the trainer notes. This was followed by Lindsay section- Activity 1 : Materials Selection & Adaptation and Activity 2 : Listening and Speaking Tasks. The rationale for doing Activity 1 & 2 later is to ensure there is a smooth flow to Activity 4 : Lesson Preparation, which will be done in Week 2, followed by the CPs working on their coursework.
- The team leader met with the caterer, Mr. Ahmad at tea break to inform him the number of CPs who will be staying over the weekend. The discussion came to an agreement that since many CPs would not be having their meal on Saturdays and Sunday (breakfast-lunch), the caterer would use that amount of allocation to give me an extra special meal on the last day of their course.
- The numbers of CPs and trainers who will be taking their meals are as follows :
  • Mon - Thursday
Breakfast, morning tea, lunch & afternoon tea - 21 CPs & 2 trainers
Dinner - 9 CPs and 2 trainers
  • Friday
Breakfast, morning tea & lunch - 21 CPs and 2 trainers
Afternoon tea & dinner - 0 (Nil)
  • Saturday
Breakfast, morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea & dinner - 0 (Nil)
  • Sunday
Breakfast, morning tea, lunch & afternoon tea - 0 (Nil)
Dinner - 9 CPs and 2 trainers
  • Note : The team leader has informed the caterer that if there are any changes in the numbers for the following weeks, the team leader for that week will inform Mr.Ahmad.
- The trainers have obtained the softcopy of the attendance form from Mr. Khaidir (HEP ELTC). The CPs names have been typed into the softcopy and the team leader was fortunate to get Mr. Julai's assistance to print 15 copies of the attendance form at BTPN Sabah. The extra copies of the attendance forms are kept in the management file in Bilik Mawar. The team leaders for the following weeks can use these forms.
- The hostel room keys of the current trainers will be returned to the office at the Hostel (Asrama Serudung Bayu). The team leader has informed the warden that it would be impossible for the lecturers to pass the room keys to the lecturers coming the following week. Thus, the warden said the BTPN staff would check with Pn. Wanda from JPN Sabah on how the trainers who arrive every Sunday can obtain their keys.
- For further enquiries, trainers can call :
Penyelia asrama - Pn. Nurimah 019-8307985

DAILY LOG
WEEK 3: DATE: 5 Mar - 9 Mar 2012
DAY 1
Trainers : Er Eng Lee (TL) & Elaine Pang
5 March 2012
- All CPs were present : 21 people
- There was a slight problem in the morning with the air-condition in the training room (Bilik Mawar), there was no power to that source although the lights were working. Elaine called the BTPN officer who then sent the technician to check it out. The air-cons were working 5 minutes later.
- The technician also assisted Eng Lee to make photocopies (10 sheets) of the cubes (short vowels - beginnings & endings) for an activity in Topic 3.
- The trainers noticed that the noodles served for morning breakfast was 'mee hoon kosong'. Thus, they spoke to the caterer during tea break and asked him to add some fish cake/ prawns to the noodles in future. Mr. Ahmad agreed to improve the quality of the food. The trainers also passed the LO for the Action Research course which was held at BTPN Sabah a week before the CPELT course started.
- The sessions went as planned. Elaine covered Topic 1 (Reading Processes) & 2 (The KBSR & KSSR) in sessions one and two until lunch break. After lunch break, Eng Lee did a recap with the CPs on Topic 1 & 2, and then started on Topic 3 (Beginning Skills in Reading). She also put up a word wall which will be up for this week. Some of the words already up today are : chunk, chunking, recycle, review, recap, revisit, collocation, digraph etc. On Friday, a bingo game will be carried out using the list of words on the word wall. Eng Lee also brought copies of the phonemic chart with pictures for all CPs. It was really helpful in getting them to have more practice.
DAY 2
6 March 2012
- All CPs were present : 21 people
- Sessions went on as scheduled. Topic 3 (by Eng Lee) & Topic 4 (by Elaine) have been completed.
- Course participants were high motivated and asked relevant questions.
- The word wall has built up with important new words such as : teachable moments, inherent vocabulary, scaffolding, authenticity, automaticity, teaching in context, strategies - blending and segmenting.
DAY 3
7 March 2012
- All 21 CPs were present
- Sessions went on as planned. Topic 5 (by Elaine) was covered.
- The trainer did a recap on Topic 4 before starting on Topic 5.
- After completing Activity 4 & 5, the trainer decided it would be better to get the CPs to demonstrate some of the activities on slide 9 of the powerpoint. One group demonstrated each of the following : choral reading, partner or buddy reading, reader's theatre and shared reading. The trainer got the CPs to identify the purpose of the activity.
- The trainer also ensured CPs were aware that Oral reading fluency comes under reading fluency. The trainer shared some info with CPs, that there is an order of activities that should be used in a sequence to achieve oral reading fluency, as below :
1. Read aloud - teacher models
2. Shared reading - with teacher (repeated oral reading)
3. Guided reading - in groups
- reader's theatre
- partner or buddy reading
4. Independent reading (extensive reading)
- After going through Handout 5.7 and Handout 5.8, the trainer felt that it would be good if CPs tried doing a screening test by marking errors on a reading text (printed) based on a recording of a students reading. Thus, the trainer included an extended activity with an authentic recording of a Year 3 pupil reading the text 'The Straw House' by James Riordon. The trainer had used these materials in the 'Teaching Beginning Reading' course in 2007. The trainer made photocopies of the text and played the recording twice for CPs to mark the errors. Trainer checked the answers with CPs after that and noted CPs had a clearer picture and better understanding of how to administer a screening test for reading in the English class.
DAY 4
8 March 2012
- 1 CP, Mohd Sharizan was absent. He has left to register for his KDC course. He has filled in the borang pengecualian kuliah and will make a photocopy of his attendance at IPG Tawau.
- The sessions went as planned. Eng Lee covered Topic 6 on Intensive Reading. The trainer covered the Barrett's taxanomy & Blooms Taxanomy in detail. She also linked the sub-skills of reading (skimming, scanning, getting main ideas, predicting, inferencing and drawing conclusions) to the QAR (Question Answer Relationship) teaching strategy and the SQ3R (Survey, Questions, Read, Recall & Repeat) learning strategy. It allowed CPs to make connections to the silent reading skills (reading comprehension) and formulating questions based on the Barrett's taxanomy for teaching and learning in ESL.
DAY 5
9 March 2012
- 1 CP, Mohd Sharizan was absent. He has started his KDC classes at IPG Tawau.
- Elaine covered Topic 7 on Lesson Planning until Activity 6 (Handout 7.6).
- At tea break (10.30am), the CPs went to the cafeteria and returned saying food was not served. After the trainer checked with the caterer, Mr. Ahmad said in the previous week, the tea break was served later with lunch at 11am. Thus, he didnt realised the tea break would resumed to the original timing decided in Week 1. (refer to log for Week 1). As the caterer had prepared the food, tea was served at 10.40am after a discussion with the caterer.
- After break, the team leader discussed with the CPs and asked them to vote how many of them would like to have a tea break at 10.30am as decided in Week 1. Majority voted and agreed for the tea time to remain at 10.30am. The team leader informed CPs and the class monitor that this timing would stay as a standing order until Week 14 and it shouldnt be changed as other implications might happen. Example, it would cause inconvenience to the caterer when meal times are changed on different weeks. It is logical that trainers and other CPs also need a break in between sessions to rest. Thus, it is not wise to have sessions from 8.00-11.00am non stop and serve the food for tea and lunch at 11.00am.
